In Praise of our Venues
The Wuthering Heights Rediscovered exhibition was still at an early stage when our original location fell through, and because we were running out of time and had limited resources, we started to look for somewhere smaller. We found the Warley Phone Box Museum, and when we approached the curators, Chris and Paul Czainski, about using the space, they replied:
“Interestingly the house next door to us has got Bronte connections, (The Grange, Warley).”
The connection was that Patrick Brontë (father of Charlotte, Emily, Anne and Branwell) had lived there for a while.
We hadn’t known this when we’d asked, and it provided us with a small epiphany: that by looking for out of the way, offbeat venues, we would be rewarded with unexpected and colourful locations that had their own stories and surprises – and that all these small pieces of serendipity would feed into the exhibition itself and make it something richer than we’d at first imagined.
From there, it was obvious that we should write a little bit about each location – and the people behind them.
